|BiographicalInfo=The main figure who spread the Zhije tradition throughout Tibet, he traveled to Tibet from India five times. The first time he arrived to Tsari (Tsa ri) via the gate of Drinthang (mgrin thang). The second time he arrived to Ngari (mnga' ris) through Kashmir (kha che). The third time, he came through Nepal and met Mangra Serpo (smang ra ser po) in Yarlung (yar klungs). They traveled to Tsang together to join Kyo Sonam Lama (skyo bsod nams bla ma). Padampa Sanggye gave them instructions on Chöd. The fourth time, he traveled across Shawa Dakgo (sha 'ug ltag sgo), a sacred place in Tsang, to Ü, and performed beneficial activities to Tsenlha county and other places. The fifth time, he landed in China and spent twelve years there, ending his journey in Dingri (ding ri) of central Tibet.

Interestingly, in a popular Tibetan narrative, people say Padampa lived in Tibet for five hundred years. According to a historical chronicle, his last time in Tibet was in 1113. During that period, he hid various concealed scriptures in a vast field of Kham. The Chöd lineage transmitted from him has been divided into the Father and Mother Lineage, which were succeeded by Mangra Serpo and Machig Labdrön respectively.

|tolExcerpt=Padampa Sanggye was a Buddhist adept well known for his teachings in Tibet, especially of the Prajñāpāramitā corpus and Mahāmudrā system, as well as what would become known as the Zhije tradition. He is also associated with Chod lineages: many sources describe him as a teacher of Machik Labdron, who would herself become known as the genetrix of Chod.
