|BiographicalInfo=Machig Labdrön was born in the year 1031, the Iron Sheep Year of the first Rabjung (the sixty-year cycle of Tibetan calendar, started at 1027), as the child of Chölha (chos lha), her father and Longmo Bumjam (klungs mo 'bum lcam), her mother. From her early childhood, she performed the recitation of texts more excellently than even the monks with precognition, and was hired to recite the Prajñāpāramitā sūtra for those monks for many years. While reading the Prajñāpāramitā, she genuinely experienced the emergence of the view of emptiness. During the same time period, she met [[Pa dam pa sangs rgyas|Padampa Sanggye]] and requested spiritual instructions from him. Later on, she followed Kyodün Sönam Lama (skyo ston bsod nams bla ma) and received the empowerment of Illusory Body (sgyu lus, one of the six doctrines of Naropa). Thence, she became the master of Zhije and Chöd.

She had five sons. They were: Kongjam (kong lcam), Lajam (la lcam), Nyingpo Drupa (snying po grub pa), Drupchung (grub chung), and Yangdrup (yang grub). She passed away in 1129, the Earth Bird Year of the second Rabjung. Her famous disciples include Nyagpa Gyaltsen (snyags pa rgyal mtshan), Antun Rinchenbar (an ston rin chen 'bar), Dre Jo-sé (dred jo sras), Shubu Lotsa (shud pu lo tsa), Tokden Dölwa (rtogs ldan rdol ba), Sangye Nyanchung (sangs rgyas gnyan chung), and Nögom Chenpo (mno sgom chen po).
