Biographical Information

Completed three-year retreat, Kagyu Ling, France, 1976-1980; served as translator for Kalu Rinpoche, 1980-1982; resident Lama, Vancouver Dharma Center, 1982-1986; engaged by Chagdu Tulku Rinpoche in 1986 to translate the Seven Treasuries of Longchenpa. Tsadra Foundation Fellow since 2000.

Richard Barron is a Canadian-born translator who specializes in the writings of Longchenpa. He has served as an interpreter for many lamas from all from all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism, including his first teacher, Kalu Rinpoche. He completed a traditional three year retreat at Kagyu Ling in France, and later became a close disciple of the late Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche. He is currently engaged in a long-term project to translate the Seven Treasuries of Longchenpa.
His other translations include Buddhahood Without Meditation, The Autobiography of Jamgön Kongtrul and A Marvelous Garland of Rare Gems: Biographies of Masters of Awareness in the Dzogchen lineage by Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche. The Autobiography of Jamgön Kongtrul was his first translation in the Tsadra Foundation Series published by Snow Lion Publications.

The Nyingma, which is often described as the oldest tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, traces its origin to Padmasambhava, who is said to have visited Tibet in the eighth century.

The Kagyu school traces its origin to the eleventh-century translator Marpa, who studied in India with Nāropa. Marpa's student Milarepa trained Gampopa, who founded the first monastery of the Kagyu order. As many as twelve subtraditions grew out from there, the best known being the Karma Kagyu, the Drikung, and the Drukpa.

The disciples of the Buddha who aspire to attain individual liberation or nirvāṇa. The final goal of the Hearers is to become an arhat, a state in which one has totally eliminated the inner problems of attachment, hatred and ignorance, the main causes for rebirth in this cycle of existence. There are four stages of a śrāvaka path including eight phases.
