| bio | Sharachchandra Shastri (1862–1916) was a Bengali Sanskrit scholar, poet, and philosopher. He was born in Bandhulikhalkula village in Goalanda upazila of the greater Faridpur district (in present-day Bangladesh). His father, Pitamvar Vidyavagish, was himself a Sanskrit scholar, and Sharachchandra received his early training in poetry, grammar, poetics, nyāya, and astrology at various catuṣpāṭhīs and at Benares College. He was conferred the honorific title Śāstrī upon passing the Upadhi examination at Sanskrit College, Calcutta.
His professional career was spent in teaching, at posts including an English school in Rajshahi, City Collegiate School in Calcutta, Darjeeling High School, Brahma Balika Shiksalay, and Calcutta Training School. Among the books he wrote and edited are Nīticampū, Śabkarācāryacarita, Rāmānujacarita, and Dakṣiṇāpatha Bhramaṇa. He also edited the Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka and collaborated with Rai Bahadur Sarat Chandra Das on Buddhist Sanskrit editorial projects. He played an active part in the compilation of the Tibetan-Sanskrit-English Dictionary, a project carried out under government initiative.
