| bio | J. J. Jones held an M.A. and worked as Deputy-Keeper in the Department of Printed Books at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.
Jones completed his English translation of the Mahāvastu in three volumes, published between 1949 and 1956 by the Pali Text Society as part of the Sacred Books of the Buddhists series. In his foreword dated April 1949, Jones acknowledged the help he received from scholars. The translation was a significant scholarly achievement, as it provided the first complete English translation of this important early Buddhist text. Jones worked from the Buddhist Sanskrit original, which was written in mixed Sanskrit, Pali, and Prakrit. |
