| bio | April 9, 2025: We are deeply saddened to share the news of the sudden passing of Dr. Michael Ium (https://www.oeaw.ac.at/en/ikga/team/research/ium-michael), who earned his PhD in 2023 from our department under the guidance of Professors Jose Cabezon and Vesna Wallace.
Michael was a brilliant and dedicated scholar of Tibetan Buddhism, whose dissertation on Tsongkhapa and the early Geluk tradition brought fresh insight, nuance, and care to the field. But beyond his intellectual contributions, Michael was a kind, humble, and deeply compassionate person. He had a quiet brilliance and a warm heart that left a lasting impression on everyone he met—fellow students, faculty, and friends alike.
He was the kind of person who lifted the whole room simply by being in it—always generous with his time, thoughtful in his words, and genuinely interested in the lives and work of those around him. Michael had just begun a promising academic career, with postdoctoral appointments at the University of Toronto and the University of Vienna, and he was excited about the future. We were excited for him, too.
His passing is an immeasurable loss to our community. We mourn him not only as a scholar, but as a beloved friend, colleague, and former student. Our hearts are with his family, friends, mentors, and all who had the joy of knowing him.
Michael, your light continues in the lives you touched. May your journey onward be filled with the same wisdom and gentleness you brought to this world.
With love,
