He also directed the interdisciplinary M.A. program. In 2003 he was awarded the Japan Foundation, a prestigious research grant awarded to only 10 scholars from across North America. He has written or co-authored at least 10 books and more than 70 articles and reviews, and has spent time in Japan studying the Japanese Great Arts and ethics.
