Born on 27th July 1927 in Porbandar, Saurashtra, and graduated in sciences from the University of Bombay in 1948; participated in archaeological explorations done by the Archaeological Research Society, Porbandar till 1954. Worked as curator at Junagadh and Jamnagar Museums and subsequently in the head office of the State Department of Archaeology, Governments of Saurashtra, Bombay and next, Gujarat. Worked on loan service as Research Associate at the American Institute of Indian Studies, Varanasi from September 1966 till February 1973. Appointed as Research Professor of Indian Art and Architecture at the L.D. Institute of Indology, Ahmedabad. On loan service since March 1974 at the American Institute of Indian Studies, Varanasi, as Research Officer for continuing his work on an extensive project entitled the Encyclopaedia of Indian Temple Architecture.
