| bio | Vīryasiṃha (Tib. དཔའ་བོ་སེང་གེ, Dpa' bo seng ge, also Dpa' seng) was the author of the Jātakamālāpañjikā (Tib. Skyes pa'i rabs kyi rgyud kyi dka' 'grel pa, "An Explanation of the Difficult Points of the Words in the Jātakamālā"), a commentary on Āryaśūra's Jātakamālā. It is preserved in the Derge Tengyur (Toh. no. 4460, vol. PO/212, folios 275v.1–312v.1) and is the only work by him recorded in the Tengyur. According to the Encyclopedia of Buddhism, his commentary is the source of the tradition that Āryaśūra originally intended to compose 100 jātaka stories, of which only 34 are known to survive. A separate textual witness—the seventeenth jātaka as elaborated in verse by Dpa' seng—is preserved in Literary Arts in Ladakh, vol. 1, pp. 123–133. A modern critical edition of the Jātakamālāpañjikā, alongside the anonymous Jātakamālāṭīkā, appears in Ratna Basu's 1989 doctoral dissertation at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität, Bonn. |
