| bio | Dr. K. Priscilla Pedersen (full name: Kusumita P. Pedersen) is a distinguished scholar, activist, and interfaith leader. She is Professor Emerita of Religious Studies at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York, where she joined the faculty in 1995 as Chair of the Department of Religious Studies.
Her academic work centers on comparative religious ethics and the religions of Asia, with particular focus on global ethics, interreligious dialogue and cooperation, human rights, and environmental ethics. She has been part of the global interfaith movement for over thirty years. Before her academic career, she served as Executive Director of the Project on Religion and Human Rights, a group that provides a forum for study and advocacy, collaborating with academic resources and public policy centers to ensure that religion is included in the promotion of human rights. She also served as Joint Secretary for Religious Affairs of the Global Forum of Spiritual and Parliamentary Leaders on Human Survival, and as Executive Director of the Temple of Understanding, which is involved with interfaith education and supporting the U.N. She is co-author of Global Ethics in Practice: Historical Backgrounds, Current Issues and Future Prospects (Edinburgh University Press, 2016) and co-editor of Faith for Earth: A Call to Action (UN Environment Programme and Parliament of the World's Religions, 2020). She has also compiled and edited librettos for two works by Philip Glass: Symphony No. 5: Bardo, Requiem and Nirmānakāya (1999) and The Passion of Ramakrishna (2006). She currently serves as Chair of the Interfaith Center of New York and as a Trustee of the Parliament of the World's Religions. She is also Vice President of the Committee of Religious NGOs at the United Nations. She has been a student of Sri Chinmoy (1931–2007) since 1971 and has published several essays on his philosophy and poetry. |
