Educated at Kyoto University's Faculty of Letters (B.A., 1971; M.A., 1973) and Marburg University in Germany (Ph.D., 1986), he has served as Lecturer at Kyushu Tokai University (1980-1984), and Research Fellow (1984-1986) and Associate Professor (1986-1991) at the National Museum of Ethnology.
