bio Douglas L. Berger is Professor of Comparative Philosophy at Leiden University in the Netherlands. His primary areas of research and teaching are classical Brāhmiṇical and Indian Buddhist thought, Classical Chinese philosophy, and cross-cultural

philosophical hermeneutics. He is the author of Encounters of Mind: Luminosity and Personhood in Indian and Chinese Thought (SUNY Press, 2015), "The Veil of Māyā:" Schopenhauer’s System and Early Indian Thought (Global Academic Publications, 2004), and coeditor, with JeeLoo Liu, of Nothingness in Asian Philosophy (Routledge, 2014). He has authored dozens of essays and book chapters on the areas of his research and is chief editor of the University of Hawai'i Press book series "Dimensions of Asian Spirituality."
